Counselor's Corner
Counseling Program at Hutchison Elementary School
At Hutchison Elementary, we are committed to supporting the academic, social, emotional, and personal development of every student. Our comprehensive school counseling program provides guidance, resources, and opportunities that help students develop essential life skills, build positive relationships, and achieve success in school and beyond.
Our program includes four key components:
-
Students participate in classroom guidance lessons throughout the school year on topics such as coping skills, time management, growth mindset, personal hygiene, healthy friendships, and self-esteem. We use The Responsive Counselor and Character Counts curricula to promote positive character development and social skills.
Students can also develop leadership skills through programs such as Girls on the Run and the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS). Schoolwide activities, including Career Day, Red Ribbon Week, and Spirit Week, encourage student engagement and community involvement.
-
We help fifth-grade students prepare for a successful transition to middle school through collaborative activities with Wessendorff Middle School. Students participate in campus tours, attend orientation sessions with middle school counselors, and explore elective opportunities such as orchestra, band, fine arts, and karate.

Responsive Services
Our school counselors provide support to students experiencing personal challenges, crises, or safety concerns. We also connect students and families with community resources, including:
- Common Threads – Clothing, shoes, and personal hygiene items.
- Memorial Hermann Lamar Clinic – Free health and mental health services for Lamar CISD students.
- HGI and TCHATT – Counseling and mental health services.
-
Hutchison Elementary implements Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to encourage and recognize positive behavior. Students earn points for demonstrating positive behaviors and can redeem them for special events, experiences, and preferred items.
Our staff also participates in professional development focused on building healthy relationships, restorative practices, and trauma-informed interventions to maintain a safe, supportive learning environment.
-
Mr. Sosa serves as the campus point of contact for Section 504 and the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, helping connect eligible students and families with appropriate educational support and resources. Assistance is also available for students in foster care.
Bullying Prevention at Hutchison Elementary School
At Hutchison Elementary, we are committed to providing a safe, respectful, and welcoming learning environment for every student. We encourage students, families, and staff to work together to recognize, prevent, and report bullying.
-
Bullying is behavior that causes physical or emotional harm, creates fear, or results in a threatening or intimidating school environment.
Bullying generally involves three key characteristics:
- Imbalance of power: A student uses power or influence to control or harm another student.
- Intent to harm: The behavior is deliberate rather than accidental.
- Repetition: The behavior occurs repeatedly toward the same student.
Bullying can take several forms, including physical aggression, name-calling, spreading rumors, deliberate social exclusion, and cyberbullying.
-
Not every unpleasant interaction between students is bullying. Examples that generally do not constitute bullying include:
- Disagreements or arguments between students.
- Accidentally bumping into someone.
- Not liking someone or choosing not to be friends.
- Being bossy or having a one-time conflict.
Important: Even when an incident does not meet the definition of bullying, hurtful or aggressive behavior should still be reported and addressed.
-
If your child experiences or witnesses bullying, encourage them to tell a trusted adult immediately. Parents and guardians may report concerns directly to the school principal or assistant principal.
You may also complete the Lamar CISD Harassment and Bullying Reporting Form, available on the Lamar CISD website under Departments → School Safety → School Safety and Crisis Resources.

Together, we can help every Hutchison student feel safe, respected, and valued!
